A color refers to one of 36 unique appearances a Pet Species can have. All regular species of pet will eventually be available in all colors. Experiment pets will only be available in Common, Chibi, and Scribble.
A pet's color is most commonly changed by Using a Potion or Elixir, but a few colors are obtainable through special Quests or other unique methods. The Miracle Potion or Loyalty Potion Totem can change a pet into any chosen color. There is a chance for the Pet Zapper to change a pets color, though not all colors are available from the zapper.
Common[]
All pets start as the color Common when they are first created, with the exception being a Steamwork pet created from scratch at Full Steam Ahead. A pet can be returned to Common through a Common Potion or an elixir.
Common pets do not share any particular color palette, but instead each species has their own unique default appearance. The markings and features present on a pet in their Common appearance are considered to be standard for that species. While other colors may distort or add features to a pet, their base markings will stay generally the same. Chibi pets often feature a pastel version of the colors from their Common appearance.
Color Fill Colors[]
Color fill colors are colors which reuse the pose of a species from its Common appearance and change only the color palette. The only exception is the Blob, which has a unique appearance for every color. While all pets of a specific color fill color will share a general palette, the exact hues and distribution of those colors varies from species to species. Nuclear is the only color fill color which adds additional markings to a pet.
There are 15 color fill colors, and most of their corresponding potions restock at the Apocalyptic Apothecary. The one exception is the Nuclear Potion, which is made at the Genetech Lab. 10 of the color fill colors also have elixirs which stock at the Apocalyptic Apothecary and will change a pet into the particular species and color combination in the name of the elixir.

Special Colors[]
Special colors fully change the appearance of a pet, with a unique pose for each different combination of special color and species. In addition to a shared color palette, special colors also have a shared emotion associated with them. Special colors often add features to a pet, or distort existing ones.
There are 20 special colors, and five of them do not have an associated potion; instead, they have their own unique method to acquire, often a special quest.
Some special colors are recolors that reuse poses from other special colors: Blacklight is a dark version of Spectrum, and Harvest is a fall version of Glade.

Give a Steamwork schematic of the desired species and a Yunium Key to Isaac at Full Steam Ahead in Ziara to change a chosen pet or create a new one. It will take a maximum of three days and you will receive a notification when your pet is completed. Steamwork Schematics can be purchased from Purveyors of Plans in Ziara between 8am and 8pm Subeta time. You will receive an event when the schematic item is in your inventory; it will take a maximum of two days but may be as quick as 15 minutes. A Yunium Key can be purchased from the 2010 section of the Steamworks Menagerie for 2,500 Steamworks Trinkets. It can also be created at the Genetech Lab by combining a Melting Kettle (Sable Smithy item), Steamwork Key Stone Mold (Sable Smithy item), and Yunium Ore (Randomly obtained by digging at the Coda Caves on the 6th and 7th of every month.) |

Achievements[]
There are achievements for owning a pet of each color except Riftborn. As the achievements are for only for owning a pet of a given color and not for using the standard method for obtaining that color, the achievements can be gained by Adopting a pet or Zapping them into a given color.
