Mori & Nori are two distinct personalities of a statue brought to life by a girl named Mono Ri. They reside in Veta Lake where they have their own Quests called Duality Quests. Mori and Nori cannot exist at the same time, and each have control of the statue's body at different times of the day. Mori has control at night (8pm Subeta time) and Nori is in control during the day (6am Subeta time).

Mori and Nori were created by a girl named Mono Ri, who grew up in Veta Lake. When Mono was a child, she discovered a seemingly magical decorative piece of stone. When she picked up the stone, she felt both a blinding light and a dark power flow through her and collapsed from the conflict of the two energies. From that moment, Mono was seemingly compelled to collect the matching pieces of the stone fragment after she learned of their existence from The Oracle.

Following directly in the footsteps of her ancestors who had also traveled far to collect strange treasures, Mono journeyed across Subeta to find other pieces of the stone puzzle. These pieces included a rock from the edge of Maleria's home and a tile from Shinwa's temple. As Mono collected these pieces, her other interests and moods began to change drastically and frequently, but her and her family dismissed most of her struggles as typical teenage behavior.

On her eighteenth birthday, Mono finally felt the statue she had created with the stone pieces was complete, aside from the original decorative disc she had found as a child. When the placed the final piece on the statue, she felt the same dark and light energies within her, but this time they flowed out of her and into the statue, turning it to flesh and bone. Mori emerged from the statue first, coaxing spirits from the wind to be her companions as she delighted in the overcast night. But both Mori and her new spirit companions disappeared with the dawn, as Nori emerged to face the rising sun.

When the statue came to life, Mono fled and she has stayed away from both Mori and Nori ever since. The Oracle confirmed she is no longer influenced by the magic that created the statue. Mono has attempted to remain out of the public eye, but still travels frequently with her family.

Mori and Nori remain in Veta Lake, perplexed by their creation and the origin of the stone disc. They both have chosen to send visiting Subetans on quests for items to replenish their magic.[1]

Backstory Rework[]

Mori and Nori's backstory was rewritten in September 2023 due to user feedback.[18][19] A post was initially made in March 2022 asking for the Cursed Quest Achievement title to be changed; this thread was eventually locked, and an official brainstorming post was made by staff in April 2022 asking for user suggestions as to how to change the characters of Mori, Nori, and Mono Ri.[20][21] Staff then decided to wait to make any changes until they could make all changes at once, thus resulting in the long period between the posting of the brainstorming thread and the implementation of the new story. Summary of Original Backstory[]

Mono Ri's parents were cursed into bearing a child for Maleria, who desired to have her own daughter. She planned to have the child rejoin her once her dark powers manifested. However, before the child's birth, The Oracle had a vision of Maleria's plan and informed Shinwa. Shinwa tried to cast a counter spell, but was only able to balance out the curse with her pure energy thus weakening the dark energy the child would wield.

Mono Ri had a somewhat normal childhood, albeit with occasional mood swings which her parents thought were typical of a young girl. Unbeknownst to the family, Maleria was watching as Mono grew, aware of Shinwa's interference and waiting for her dark powers to overcome Shinwa's meddling.

At the stroke of midnight on Mono's eighteenth birthday, Maleria finally sensed the darkness inside Mono was strong enough. She called out to her daughter, Mori, instructing her to kill Mono and her parents and come join Maleria in the Darkside. Mori's first act was to do as Maleria said. However, she only made it as far as the outskirts of the Darkside. There, the sun began to rise and Nori, the personality born of Shinwa's blessing, was able to take control.

Nori originally sought to face Maleria for revenge for what Mori had done, but as she approached Maleria's home and night began to fall once more, Nori realized she did not yet have the strength to fight Maleria. Shinwa's blessing was strong enough to keep Mori from reemerging for that one night, so Nori traveled back to Mono's empty home in Veta to keep Mori away from those she could harm. From there, both girls would continue request items from travelers to help them overcome their other half until the present day, eight years later.
